The first stills from tvN’s Entourage are out, and for a remake of an HBO series that depicts the cutthroat entertainment industry where egos and emotions run high, our first glimpse is decidedly sunlit and understated. I was totally expecting to see the talent agent played by Jo Jin-woong (Signal) holler into his phone or chuck his dissatisfying lunch across the room. Or at his assistant. But perhaps they’re saving the good stuff for when the show premieres. The fully preproduced remake is about a movie star and his entourage consisting of his close circle of childhood buddies and his agent, navigating the frequently vapid, occasionally glamorous world of showbiz. Seo Kang-joon (Cheese in the Trap) plays Young-bin, the hot young rising movie star, and Park Jung-min (You’re All Surrounded) plays his best friend and manager named Ho-jin. Lee Kwang-soo (Dear My Friends) plays Joon, Young-bin’s cousin and C-list actor, and Lee Dong-hwi (Answer Me 1988) is Turtle, friend of Young-bin and worrier of nothing. And finally, Jo Jin-woong takes on the role of Kim Eun-gab, Young-bin’s powerful talent agent. In the top still, the boys are looking cool and youthful with their easy stances. In the bottom stills, Jo Jin-woong appears very much like a talent agent in his tailored suit. Of course he’s looking at his phone, and his office wouldn’t be his if there weren’t stacks of scripts on the table. With a cast like this, I’ll definitely be tuning in. Ooh yes! Now this is one casting I can totally get behind. Surely, I’m not the only one who misses seeing Lee Bo-young (God’s Gift – 14 Days) in dramaland. Lee has been offered the titular role in tvN’s remake of the Japanese drama Mother, which tells the story of a woman who kidnaps a mistreated young girl and decides to become her mother. Well, I guess “mother” is more like it. Lee Bo-young has not made any confirmations at this time and is currently reviewing the script. She’s reportedly one of many A-list actresses that have been approached for this role. The Korean remake of Mother will be written by Jung Seo-kyung, the scribe of film auteur Park Chan-wook’s films Thirst and this year’s much-buzzed-about erotic period piece The Handmaiden. This is Jung Seo-kyung’s first foray into writing dramas; the scripts of four episodes have already been completed, and now the preliminary stages of casting have begun. tvN is no stranger to remakes with this year’s remake of CBS legal drama The Good Wife lauded as a major success (I concur!). They’re betting big and hoping for yet another hit with the upcoming remake of HBO series Entourage that will premiere on November 4. The last time tvN remade a Japanese drama was in 2014 with Liar Game, the sequel for which many fans are still pining for. The original Mother premiered in 2010 on Japanese broadcast network NTV and won numerous awards at the Tokyo Drama Awards that year. Should Lee Bo-young confirm, she’ll go from playing a mother searching for her kidnapped daughter to playing a “mother” who kidnaps somebody else’s daughter. I can easily picture her rocking this role and would definitely tune in. She’s got fierceness in spades and is always a delight on screen. I’m a little sad if this means that Yoon Doo-joon (Let’s Eat) is out of the running for a drama comeback in the immediate future, but on the other hand, how could I possibly complain about a reunion between Yeon Woo-jin (Divorce Lawyer in Love) and the Marriage Not Dating creative team? Yoon Doo-joon was given an initial offer to star in tvN’s new romantic-comedy drama Introverted Boss, but he passed on the role and the offer has gone to Yeon Woo-jin; now there’s a very good chance that Marriage Not Dating’s lead actor, PD Song Hyun-wook, and writer Joo Hwa-mi will be reuniting on their next project. Yeon Woo-jin is reportedly considering favorably and in negotiations to star, so while he’s not confirmed, it sounds likely that he’ll sign on. The new series is about an extremely introverted man who’s successful in the PR business, but veiled in mystery because he hates to have any attention drawn to himself. He’s often misunderstood by others because he avoids eye contact and seems aloof, but all of his arrogance and mystery is actually a carefully crafted image that he hides behind because he doesn’t want to be around people. He’s described as extremely sensitive and shy, and despite hiding out in his room most of the time, he’s managed to become “the silent monster” of the PR industry. But by hiding in his room, he loses everything, and he begins to dream of a life out in the world. The drama is about his personal growth as he slowly emerges from his shell. And of course because dramaland can’t be without its diametric opposites, he’ll have a romance with an outgoing heroine. It’s basically Flower Boy Next Door with Park Shin-hye and Yoon Shi-yoon swapped around, but I really enjoyed that setup, so I’m game for more. It’s nice to anticipate a drama from a trusted team, because I remember Marriage Not Dating with particular fondness, and Yeon Woo-jin was absolutely hilarious in that role. It’ll be really fun to watch him take on a sensitive character who’s all talk, and I can’t wait to see who gets cast as his love interest. I can already imagine how crazy she’s going to drive him, muahaha. Perhaps the writing was already on the wall with the departure of Kang Gary last month, but now it looks like SBS’s Sunday night variety standby Running Man may be coming to an end, at least in the format that we’ve come to know and love. It has been confirmed that two more cast members will be leaving the show: Actress Song Ji-hyo (This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair) and singer Kim Jong-kook will say goodbye to the series at the end of this year, and in their wake, producers are planning to overhaul the show’s concept and relaunch with a Season 2 in 2017. The biggest change will be in potential new member Kang Ho-dong (A Hyung I Know), who is currently in talks to join the cast. The remaining members of Running Man—Yoo Jae-suk, Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, and Ji Suk-jin—will stay on, and there’s talk of looking for more people to join the second season. Yoo Jae-suk and Kang Ho-dong haven’t shared a show since X-Man (2003-2007), which a good portion of the Running Man staff also worked on, so there’s a certain level of curiosity and interest in their reunion alone. But it’s usually not a good sign when a show gets a facelift and attempts to hang on to former glory, though I’d argue that Running Man already lost its sheen a long time ago. Ratings that used to be in the teens have been down to the 6% range lately, and though I was one of those faithful viewers who’d seen every episode from the start, I stopped watching it altogether at the beginning of 2016. Even though I haven’t checked back with the show in a while, it still makes me sad to think of a Running Man without the Monday Couple and Spartakooks; but seven years is a long time to be part of a weekly variety show. There’s no telling what the second season will look like (will there even be any running?), but I’ll at least tune in to say goodbye to the version of Running Man that I remember fondly. More information regarding KBS family drama Father Is Weird has been released with new actors joining and others confirming their roles. Kim So-yeon (All’s Well With a Happy Home) has been added as the latest member of the cast, as the eldest daughter of the central family. Father Is Weird is purported to be a warm feel-good drama centered around a family living in the suburbs of Seoul. The titular patriarch of the family will be played by Kim Young-chul, who coincidentally also played Kim So-yeon’s father in their last project, All’s Well With a Happy Home. The similarities don’t end there. For Happy Home, he played the owner of a Chinese restaurant, and for this upcoming drama, he’s been cast as the owner of a snack restaurant. He loves his wife and four kids, but has been hiding a deep secret for many years. Kim So-yeon has been cast as his eldest daughter, which was also her role in Happy Home. But this time she’s not a housewife; she’s a glamorous, confident lawyer. Usually a little more selfish than not, she ignores most of her family’s squabbles, but during critical moments, she always rises to the occasion. Kim Sang-kyung (Jang Young-shil) is currently in consideration to play a variety PD who becomes her counterpart in love, but nothing is confirmed. In fact, KBS has explicitly said that Kim Sang-kyung is one of four actors whom they have approached to possibly take this lead role. Jung So-min (D-Day) is currently in negotiations to play Kim So-yeon’s younger sister, who despite lacking in beauty or grades when compared to her elder sister, still has a great personality and appetite. When she enters Haewon Entertainment Company as a new employee, romantic hijinks ensue between her and their biggest celebrity, Ahn Joong-hee, played by Lee Joon (Woman With a Suitcase). He’s an American-raised star actor, who’s never lost a lead role since his debut ten years ago. He’s supposed to be egotistical and self-absorbed, which I can totally see Lee Joon pulling off, especially after his stint as a chaebol heir in Mr. Back. For the upcoming KBS comedic family drama Father is Weird, an earnest patriarch and his dedicated wife live in the outskirts of Seoul along with their one son and three marriageable daughters until one day, a Hallyu celebrity becomes a permanent resident in their home. Kim So-yeon and Jung So-min confirmed recently, and it’s only Ryu Hwa-young, up for the youngest sister’s role, who has yet to make a final decision. Kim So-yeon’s character is a beautiful, intelligent lawyer who radiates confidence. Mostly wrapped up in her own life, she doesn’t care to involve herself in family affairs, but does so when she is needed. Jung So-min plays the second sister, who, when compared to her successful siblings, is often found to be lacking. However, she possesses a strong spine, cheerful personality, and hearty appetite. Ryu Hwa-young is considering the offer to play the family’s maknae. Her character is so glamorously attractive that she doesn’t remember a time when she didn’t have an on-call boyfriend. Her main flaw is that despite her gorgeous face and figure, she’s naively simple, which leads her to make reckless, scatterbrained decisions. I’ve seen Ryu Hwa-young in Ex-Girlfriend Club and Age of Youth, and she seems to have been typecast in the role of the curvaceous girl with more boobs than brains. I am hopeful that because Father is Weird is a longer drama, her character will become more nuanced, and she will have more opportunity to demonstrate her acting skills as the series progresses. Other actors who have signed on to star in the cast include: Lee Joon (Woman With a Suitcase) as the self-absorbed Hallyu star, and Kim Young-chul (All’s Well With a Happy Home) and Kim Hae-sook (Yeah, That’s How It Is) as the parents of the central family. If Kim Haneul’s most recent drama On the Way to the Airport was a subdued and atmospheric depiction of adultery, then her latest film Misbehavior (Korean title: Teacher) appears to be quite the opposite, charged with the heated passion of forbidden desire and torrid jealousy. Misbehavior takes place at an all boys high school where Kim Haneul plays a contract teacher named Hyo-joo. Her colleague Hae-young, played by Yoo In-young (Goodbye Mr. Black), is a staff teacher and the privileged daughter of the head of the school board, who develops an illicit relationship with the student Hyo-joo’s been eyeing. Lee Won-geun (The Good Wife) plays Jae-ha, the student and dancer who gets involved with both teachers. Fueled by jealousy, Hyo-joo is bent on taking Jae-ha away from Hae-young, to snatch just one thing away from the woman who seemingly has it all. In the teaser, Hyo-joo confronts Hae-young about seeing her and Jae-ha in the throes of passion in the school gym. Hae-young begs her to stay quiet, but Hyo-joo coldly replies that she never said she’d turn a blind eye to it. “Since you have your dad’s clout, you may think the school is your playground, but this is a boys school. As your sunbae and fellow colleague, this is a warning,” we hear her say to Hae-young. But Hae-young grows suspicious when she sees Hyo-joo and Jae-ha together, and we hear Hyo-joo ask, “Isn’t it funny? For you, it’s okay, but for me, it’s not?” Hyo-joo finds Jae-ha sprawled on the floor with empty beer cans strewn about and invites him home, and later we see him on top of her asking, “Should I be your lover?” Naturally, this student-teacher love triangle gets messy, and Hyo-joo sees green when she catches Jae-ha pull Hae-young in for a kiss. The Moon That Embraces the Sun and Sungkyunkwan Scandal were both highly successful drama adaptations that were based on author Jung Eun-kwol’s novels, so it’s no wonder that SBS snapped up the rights to the author’s most recent work, called Hong Chun-gi. The new novel is another fanciful reimagining of history set in Joseon, much in the same vein as the two previous works, and the adaptation rights were scooped up right away after the book was published earlier this month. The fusion sageuk is set in the early 15th century and tells the story of the only female painter in Joseon, named Hong Chun-gi, who is mentioned only briefly in historical record. The novel imagines her colorful life story as a beautiful painter who enters the palace and shares lovelines with a blind astronomer and arts enthusiast Grand Prince Anpyeong, third son of King Sejong. Hong Chun-gi’s mother once prayed to the heavens to send a suitor down for her daughter to marry, and one day when a strikingly beautiful young man falls from the sky right in front of her, she believes he’s been sent from the heavens just for her. Pfft, I like her already. The young man, named Ha Ram, is nearly blind due to an accident during a rain ceremony, and can only see the color red. He holds a position in the palace as an astronomer, and after meeting Hong Chun-gi, he discovers that there’s a larger mystery surrounding his eyes. It’s described as a story about the ardent love and the cheerful life of Hong Chun-gi, which sounds like a nice mix of Moon/Sun’s earnest romance and Sungkyunkwan Scandal’s bright sensibility. At least I hope that’s the winning combination that drama producers are going for. SBS has begun pre-production on Hong Chun-gi, which is being planned for a 2018 broadcast. Lee Yuri (Heaven’s Promise) has been offered the role of eldest sister in the Father Is Weird family after Kim So-yeon (All’s Well in a Happy Home) backed out of the project due to personal reasons. The upcoming KBS weekend drama is a feel-good comedy about what happens to a boisterous family of six when a Hallyu star suddenly comes to live in their humble home. The character that has been offered to Lee Yuri is a cool, chic lawyer, who is not lacking in anything, be it intelligence or beauty. As the eldest daughter (but second child) of the Byun family, she is headstrong and self-centered. However, she stays loyal to her family and comes through for them at the most decisive moments. Ryu Soo-young (Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho) is in talks to play her love interest who is a broadcast PD. Lee Yuri is no stranger to weekend family dramas. In fact, she was catapulted to fame because of her role as a deranged greedy adopted sister in addictive makjang Jang Bo-ri Is Here. She even won the Daesang at the 2014 MBC Awards for her stellar performance. I’ve seen Lee Yuri in a couple dramas, including her recent daily drama Heaven’s Promise and tvN miniseries Superdaddy Yeol, and I must admit she does shine when she plays the evil one. But if she is cast, I’ll be infinitely more likely to watch Father Is Weird, just to see Lee Yuri flexing her acting muscles. And it doesn’t hurt that her character looks like she’ll have a bit of a bad girl streak. Rounding out the Father is Weird cast are Kim Young-chul (All’s Well in a Happy Home) and Kim Hae-sook (Yeah, That’s How It Is), who play the titular patriarch and his devoted wife. Ooh, drama reunion! I never saw Lee Bo-young (God’s Gift–14 Days) and Lee Sang-yoon (On the Way to the Airport) together in their hit weekend drama My Daughter Seo-young, but I love each of them separately, and based on the cute couple stills and the ratings (it was a huge hit that reached 47.6%), I may have to marathon their first drama before they sign on to their second. The two actors are up for the leading roles in Punch writer Park Kyung-soo’s next drama, a police-legal thriller called Whisper headed to SBS this spring. Supporting players Kwon Yul (Bring It On, Ghost) and Park Se-young (Beautiful Mind) are also considering offers. Park Kyung-soo is known for his hard-hitting dramas that deal with power and corruption (The Chaser, Empire of Gold, Punch) and he’ll be reuniting with PD Lee Myung-woo (Punch, You’re All Surrounded) for this new suspense melodrama about the massive corruption dealt out of the biggest law firm in Korea. Our protagonists will be the good guys out to uncover a scandal of greed and power. Lee Bo-young has been cast as a detective who only sees half of her paycheck because she has to repay her family’s debt. She’s a section chief who spends all of her time with petty criminals and speaks harshly, but she’s also a young girl at heart who still blushes when she’s around her crush. Lee Sang-yoon has been offered the role of an elite judge with a brilliant mind and a warm heart, who listens to those who are weak. He’s a character who looks just as comfortable in sweats as he does in a judge’s robes, and he hates nepotism more than anything. He wants to show his father that he can climb the (metaphorical) rock cliff with nothing but his bare hands and stand at the summit.  Kwon Yul has been offered the role of an attorney at Taebaek, the law firm at the center of the story. He’s a sharp character born with a golden spoon in his mouth, who despite being wealthy and elite, knows how to blend and get along with the regular folk. He handles large corporations and uses the law to increase their profit margins—something he has exceptional skill in—and all the associates who want hefty incentives are clamoring to work under him. Kwon Yul seems pretty perfect for that kind of character. Park Se-young is up to play a spoiled, entitled heiress who’s decked out in designer goods from head to toe and makes her privilege known. She’s lived her whole life treating others however she pleased, while no one dares to treat her badly. She suffers from severe mood swings, and in one instant her emotions can suddenly flip from joy to sorrow. Yikes, she sounds like a terror.It’s nice to know that our leads are a cop and a judge who aren’t corrupt (I’m hoping… you never know with this writer!), because with a giant firm filled with shady lawyers backed by chaebols, we need all the good guys we can get.
