Star
Cuddles and fights in Hwarang’s lighthearted second teaser
Nov 29, 2016
Every time I see new promo material for
KBS’s youth sageuk Hwarang, it switches gears on me—the posters seemed light
and fluffy, the first teaser seemed earnest and at least trying to be serious,
and the second teaser is totally goofy and slapstick. I wasn’t quite expecting this kind of humor, but at least now we know what
to expect of the show? I’m definitely retuning my expectations after this
latest teaser, because Hwarang looks like it’s planning to be a light campus
romp, closer to Weightlifting Fairy than Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo or
Moonlight Drawn By Clouds.
The coming-of-age story is set 1500 years
in the past, and tells the story of Silla’s elite, beautiful warriors, known as
Hwarang. Park Seo-joon (She Was Pretty) stars as a young man who rises above
his low birth to become one of the elite Hwarang, and Park Hyung-shik (High
Society) is a young king who hides his identity and becomes a warrior due to
threats on his life. Go Ara (You’re All Surrounded) is the woman they’ll both
love, who is half-royal, half-commoner by birth, and Min-ho (Because It’s the
First Time), Do Ji-han (Basketball), Jo Yoon-woo (I Order You), and V of
Bangtan Boys co-star as the rest of the Hwarang crew.
The teaser opens as Go Ara arrives in the
compound where the Hwarang boys are trained, and gapes at the scene before her.
The caption tells us: “The rude youths who are going to change the world are
coming!” One of the boys announces that the hell gates of Hwarang are finally
open, and we see them brawling, fighting during sporting matches, cuddling with
Park Seo-joon, and… breaking out into dance? What…?
It’s total chaos, and their teacher Sung
Dong-il seems to be driven crazy by their antics, though he busts out some
dance moves of his own when they aren’t watching. Park Seo-joon says in
voiceover, “Is there no law in this place?” while cheeky Park Hyung-shik says,
“We’re going to have some fun.” The fun and the fights, I get—they are
hot-blooded young warriors in training, after all. But what I don’t understand
is Go Ara’s horrified reaction to walking in on the boys’ shower. Does not
compute.
I wonder if it’s going to be funny or just
end up a hodgepodge, but either way, I hope you’re in for some flower boy
hijinks, because that’s definitely what we’re getting. Hwarang airs
Monday-Tuesday following The Man Living in Our House, and premieres December
19. Source-http://www.dramabeans.com/2016/11/cuddles-and-fights-in-hwarangs-lighthearted-second-teaser/
